Week 6 - Stay smart online : protecting your computer

This week you will look at a site called staysmartonline.  This like the previous sites that you have looked at is an important resource to use and it is rich with information with a strong focus on protection and prevention.  There are a few things that I would like you to do this week.

1. Add this site http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/home to your favourites, it is one of those sites that will be useful to refer back to and also recommend to people.  Due to the amazing amount of information it is a site that you should explore when you have more time.  There are fact sheets, videos and heaps of links to other useful websites.

2. Click on the home users tab http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/home_users and choose one of the four sections to further investigate.
Choose from -
Protect yourself
Protect your children
Secure your computer or
Secure your mobile phone and devices.

Comment about what is information is available in the section that you choose.

3. Click on the video tab http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/videos
and watch one of the many videos that are available, make a comment if there is one that you found particularly useful.

4. I often send an alert email to you which I have received from the Alert Service.  I would suggest that perhaps you sign up to this Alert Service http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/alert_service using your own personal/home email to keep informed about the various scams, viruses and malware that are out there.

Earlier this year the eSmart workgroup participated in the StaySmartOnline Awareness Week.  This resource certainly supports the whole idea of being eSmart so please refer back to this website when you need some information, either for yourself, your family or a customer.

  1. Another great site! I looked at Securing your mobile phone & devices and found a couple of good tips that I have either put into practice or checked that I am doing correctly. It was interesting to note the symptoms of malicious software infection - hope I never have to deal with that little gem! I have also tried out obtaining my International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) and the instructions worked! - so now I have recorded the number AND the instructions. I also watched a number of videos - short, to the point and very informative. Loved that they were set to music and mostly showed what can happen if you are not alert to the dangers of cyberland - very well done. DG

  2. 'I'm alone with you tonight' is now stuck in my head thanks to the new song 'Stay smart online' very catchy music in the videos, wonder how far these songs will reach? They need to flood our community so that 'everyone' is exposed to them. LN

  3. AH- I have a smart phone so I had a look at Securing mobile phones and devices and there is a lot of information that is quite useful such as not using public wi fi that isn't encrypted especially if your doing things such a banking online and turning your Bluetooth off unless you need it. Treating your phone like your wallet is pretty good advice keep it safe. I watched a couple of the videos, they were short and sweet and got the point across.

  5. I looked at 'protect your children' at stay smart online and found it useful and easy to follow. Also watched the video by the Australian Institute of Sport and thought using sporting celebrities a good way to promote staying safe on line for children and teens. ab

  7. I looked at the Protect Yourself section of the website which contained some really great tips on recognizing spam emails and hoaxes. The information was written in a really easy to understand and straightforward manner. After reading the info on the website it seems to be all just common sense and the adage that if it seems too good to be true is usually is, really is the case and we should all err on the side of caution when receiving emails from those we don't know. 9. I chose the section, "Protect your children." It was very informative and helpful. I wasn't aware that you could check to see if your ISP is family friendly by looking for a ladybird logo on the website. I also liked the option of using tools that filter access to chat rooms and prevent giving out personal information. The visual impact of videos is another way of getting the message across and having celebrities and sports people promote staying safe online could be quite effective. WW

  10. This is a great site, well laid out and easy to navigate. I looked at "Secure your computer" and found a couple of tips I have now put in place at home. I went on to "Secure your mobile phone" and found some good advice there too. A really practical site with good advice for everyone - I've bookmarked this at home too. VG
