Week 8 New internet users - internet basics

Last week we looked at Tech Savvy Seniors and thanks for your feedback on ideas for further training and how best we can use this resource.  Am still working on putting the program together so any more ideas are most welcome.  I think most of you commented that Tech Savvy Seniors is a great website to point 'older citizens' too and will be most useful due to the wide range of short videos that are part of the package.
Another very useful site for people who really are new to internet or are unsure of what the internet can be used for is http://www.internetbasics.gov.au/
Again there are a number of videos on a variety of topics which also come with a full transcript of what is being said.
Task 1 - This week I would like you to choose one of the four sections on the website and comment on its applications in a library setting.
Task 2 - One of the features of this website is the 'internet terms explained' section http://www.internetbasics.gov.au/internet_terms_explained
Have a look at this and see if you can find terms that you weren't sure about it, perhaps make a comment on something that is new to you from this list.

  1. KT -I was very excited to view the internetbasics site because I had an enquiry about connection to the internet and what is best for her ipad. Unfortunately, under connections it did not talk about cellular or connections to ipads or androids. Then we had to look at computer terms and yet again - cellular was not explained. So again the need for updating. But there is a good general explanations. So the new term I didn't know is VoIP which is voice over the internet protocol.

  2. SH Had good information on what you can do on the internet which was educational
but there wasn't any information about connections to ipads etc. Which is unfortunate as I do not have a lot of knowledge of these devices so it would have been beneficial to have a site to direct people to.

  3. NS. I had a look at how to connect to the internet, which was good and basic. Public Libraries got a big mention as a place to go to use internet which was great, some people probably don't realise they have such easy access. I had never heard of Teleheath either ( Health services over internet), l knew quite a lot of the terms explained which surprised me although still sometimes hard to explain to another person what they mean.

  4. I think that this website can be used in conjunction with some of our basic inhouse training, also as a link on our website. Like some of the comments above I think as already mentioned more on ipads/tablets is important as these are very popular devices. The new term I didn't know was VOIP. ab

  5. I had a look at the "What you can do on the Internet" section of the website. We have quite a few older people come into the library with ipads that they receive as gifts and a lot of the time their intention is only to download audio or e-books. This website gives a really great explanation of what the internet has to offer them in the way of communication with family and on-line services that they can access from the comfort of their own homes. Bill paying and health care information is particularly useful for older people and it is all explained in a really straightforward manner and is very easy to understand manner.
I found that I knew what most of the internet terms meant but I didn't know the difference between HTTP and HTTPS so that was useful to know. LW

  6. Had a look at the section on Getting Started on the Internet and was impressed by the videos and the topics they covered. The information was easy to understand and explained in a very clear manner. Very impressed with this site and believe it could help with BFS training and with some of the other senior patrons who are mystified by the whole deal. I particularly liked the way the first video went through the instructions for how to access any of the other videos step by step and very clearly!
Wasn't sure what a "digital certificate" was, so was interested to learn that it is one way of checking on the authenticity of the owner of a website. Will be looking out for that little gem from now on. DG

  7. I looked at Internet Basics and found it easy to understand and a useful site to recommend to people. I have had people come into the library and ask for help with their ipads. I am not familiar myself with using an ipad so would benefit from training myself! Some of the terms I hadn't come across before were HTTPS, Telehealth, VOIP, and Worm ( a type of malware that copies itself onto your computer and can damage your computer's system). WW

  8. What you can do on the internet - very basic but great for anyone who does not understand what can be done on the internet, explains the basics.
Do not know much about - digital certificate tells you if the owner of the website is who they say they are. WO
