Week 7 Tech Savvy Seniors

Hot off the press, a new program from the Telstra Foundation is now available to support Seniors in Victoria to access free internet training.  Last Friday the program was launched officially in Ballarat for Victorians, particularly in rural and regional areas.  It has already been offered in New South Wales for a little while.
The new program will provide access to Tech Savvy Seniors DVDs for libraries to offer their patrons; we have ordered our maximum of ten copies so hopefully they will be here soon.  All the videos and training documents are also available online, we will also have access to funding to assist us rolling the program out either using external trainers or volunteers/staff so they can deliver the training.  Within this training there will be an element of online safety, but there are actually 66 different video segments covering all sorts of information to encourage people to use technology smarter and safer.
Please watch this video to give you an overview of the type of program that will be offered.

This week I would also like you to look at http://www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au/Home/News-and-Opinions/Your-place/Latest-News/Article?Key=124 and then peruse through the website http://www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au/Home/Seniors-Card/Your-Seniors-Card/Age-Friendly-Partners/Tech-Savvy-Seniors/self-teach-videos
to become familiar with what will be offered.
In your comments I would like you to suggest some ways we can promote this and how best we should offer the training packages.  I will be applying for funding to run a program so your advice will be much appreciated.

  1. This is great I love that I can now send my older family members to this site. Might let me and the grandkids off the hook? I think that a slide show to promote this should be made and displayed in all our Medical Providers, Centre Link, Seniors clubs, Service business' and if they don't have a t.v. or screen available supply them with a desk top digital frame . A short training session for the Home Help staff and any other aged care professionals to inform them of the service available so they can refer it to those in need, these sessions could also be extended to library staff, volunteers working with any seniors, Aged Care Facilities ect. 2. What a fabulous resource for our Seniors! These short training sessions can be viewed many times over until they have the basics and I like that they are so short. I agree with the above - after talking it over in the car with LN, I agree that the carers and volunteers who are visiting our Seniors in their homes need to know about our programs so that they can spread the word amongst our stay at home Seniors. Promotion within the library could also be of benefit and may make better use of our Broadband For Seniors computers. This might be something that could be on there for patrons to access all the time and so use them for the purpose they were intended for. DG

  3. What a great resource for Seniors!! I love the self teach video's, not just for Seniors l now know how to set up my home network lol..I think it is essential that Seniors learn to be more Tech Savvy, like that lady in the video said, "Helps you stay young" and also when dealing with a lot of Government departments etc. these days you have to 'Download Forms' and they don't like to post letters anymore, so Seniors that stay savvy I feel will be less isolated and feel more part of that Technology community. Definitely using Volunteers to deliver some of these programs would be good. Sessions in the Library like, "How to start a Facebook page" would be interesting, l'm sure there are plenty of Seniors interested but to scared to try on their own. Training on how to use technology safer is essential and the delivery of this part of the program should be highlighted with any aspect of training. NS

  4. Excellent! Somewhere to direct my older patrons who are just learning to use technology where they can take their time and absorb the information. It would be a great thing for the activities officer at hostels to aid the residents. The activities person is there on site available for residents to access help. SH

  5. AH-This is such a good idea, these videos are short and informative and easy to understand and follow. Promoting in the library as well as places that senior frequent as well as in the aged care facilities, maybe running a few lessons to introduce them to free internet training.

  6. I agree with Sheila this is a great place to direct seniors who want more information and want to become more tech savvy. I also like the idea of partnering with existing aged care services and facilities. I like the Tech Savvy Seniors youtube as it is by seniors. AB

  7. I thought this was an excellent website - so user friendly and very unintimidating for older internet novices. I found some of the topics on there really useful for myself as well. Perhaps we could have this website open each day on one of our seniors computer so that users could have a look at it in a relaxed setting and as part of their sessions with our volunteer tutors. LW

  8. Excellent website and videos, we have now received the DVDs you asked for. Will be great to roll out to the Branch Libraries who do not have Broadband for Seniors program. Need to advertise to the Seniors Group- U3A, Probus etc. Links from our homepage and also the Public Internet desk top. Show Shire Aged care staff, flyers to Meals on Wheels people and send out Sirsidynix email. WO

  9. This is a great website to recommend to seniors. I have seen for myself the difference it makes to seniors confidence and independence when they can achieve something they thought they wouldn't be able to do themselves, eg placing Holds online using their own computers. It's great to be able to offer free internet training as most Beginning Computer courses have a fee and this can be an issue for some older people. With Seniors Week coming up in October, perhaps our libraries could offer some of the topics and promote the dvds. Also, we might be able to promote the program at local events like bushmarkets, etc. WW

  10. Time for a cross-department team on this one. I'm trying to catch up on the sites you have posted and have looked at some at home, not I'm posting some comments. We really need to Aged Services onto this - both in Campaspe and Murray. Get the home care workers onto this - I'm sure they get questions from the people they work with. Also reach out to the Seniors groups around the Shire (and Moama too). Maybe have a session at the library and advertise it for anyone who works with Seniors. What about Telstra themselves?? The Telstra Foundation developed it - do they have anyone who would be wiling to visit and provide training, a seminar, funding for further rollout?? Also work with the likes of Neighbourhood House to include the site in their computer courses.
